- Foster Volunteer Agreement & Release of Liability
  
  Please read the following Foster Volunteer Agreement and Release of Liability (“Agreement”) carefully. You must agree to these terms to participate as a Foster Volunteer for the Lawrence Humane Society (“LHS”). By selecting “I Agree” and signing below, you confirm that you are at least 18 years old, that you understand the terms of this Agreement, and that you are voluntarily entering into this Agreement with LHS.
- I acknowledge that the foster animal(s) is/are the property of LHS or their legal owner (for Crisis Pet Retention cases). I agree to: (A) Not transfer the care of the animal(s) to anyone else without direct permission from LHS; (B) Return said animal(s) immediately upon request; AND (C) Notify LHS immediately if I am no longer able to care adequately for the foster animal(s).*

- I acknowledge for the duration of the foster care, the foster animal(s) become(s) my responsibility and are subject to the ordinances in the city in which I reside. I agree to: (A) Comply with applicable local ordinances; (B) Follow all LHS animal care instructions based on the unique needs of the foster animal(s), including medications, appointments, and updates; AND (C) Maintain the foster animal(s) in a safe, humane, and sanitary environment and to provide for their daily needs in accordance with all LHS policies, procedures, and veterinary instructions. I understand that LHS Foster Volunteer policies and procedures will be provided to me, and it is my responsibility to review and abide by all established policies and procedures.*

- I agree that the foster animal(s) will receive: (A) Reasonable exercise in a fenced yard, dog run, or while on a leash; (B) No chaining or tethering as a primary means of confinement; AND (C) Continuous supervision and protection under my direct control, ensuring the animal(s) are never permitted to roam freely outside the fenced area or home. This includes a prohibition on off-leash dog park visits.*

- I agree to keep and feed the foster animal(s) separately from my household pets unless I have received specific approval from LHS staff. I agree to not allow the foster animal(s) to interact with resident pets, other animals, or children until introductions have been made safely and approval has been received from LHS staff. I agree to supervise the foster animal(s) at all times when loose in the home or around other animals, children, or new people, maintaining direct visual contact during interactions.*

- I agree to abide by all the requirements outlined in Kansas Administrative Regulations Article 18 for each of the foster animal(s) in my care. I acknowledge that the premises where the foster animal(s) are being housed may be inspected by an authorized representative of LHS, the Kansas Department of Agriculture, or the Kansas Animal Health Commissioner or their designee. I agree to allow reasonable access for such inspections if requested.*

- I acknowledge and recognize that any items provided to me for fostering (equipment, supplies, materials, etc.) remain the property of Lawrence Humane Society. I agree to take reasonable care of all LHS-provided items, use them only for fostering purposes, and return them immediately when requested or at the end of my foster term. I agree to notify LHS if any items are damaged, missing, or not functioning properly and acknowledge that I may be financially liable for replacing any lost or damaged items.*

- I acknowledge that I must obtain LHS approval before seeking any outside veterinary treatment, behavioral services, boarding, or grooming for foster animals. I understand that unauthorized services may not be reimbursed and that I may be responsible for any resulting expenses. If the foster animal(s) is/are harmed due to my negligence, I may be held responsible for related veterinary costs. Reimbursement for authorized expenses is subject to prior approval, proper documentation, and the discretion of LHS.*

- In the case of an emergency, I agree to make every effort possible to contact a LHS representative before considering an emergency veterinary visit. In the event that I am unable to reach a LHS representative, I agree to immediately take the animal(s) directly to the nearest animal emergency clinic and authorize any treatment deemed reasonably necessary by the clinic. Reasonable emergency veterinary expenses may be reimbursed by LHS if prior contact could not be established and the care provided to the foster animal(s) was deemed necessary.*

- I acknowledge that LHS cannot guarantee the health, temperament, or behavior of any foster animal(s) placed in my care and cannot be held responsible for unexpected behaviors while the foster animal(s) is/are in my home. I understand that animals can be unpredictable and that fostering carries inherent risks, including potential harm, injury or illness to myself, household members, visitors, or pets. I voluntarily assume all such risks associated with fostering.*

- I acknowledge that any foster animal(s) in my care may have, or may have been exposed to, infectious or contagious conditions that could spread to other animals or humans. I agree to follow all instructions and disinfection procedures provided by LHS to reduce the risk of disease transmission.*

- If I receive one or more animals with an infectious or contagious condition, I agree to house the affected animal(s) in a designated quarantine area as instructed by LHS. I understand that it is my responsibility to keep all household pets current on vaccinations and that LHS is not responsible for any medical expenses related to their care or treatment. I understand that such foster placements may require a written treatment plan and exposure-risk statement to be signed by both myself and the LHS veterinarian.*

- XII. I acknowledge that any foster animal(s) in my care may be part of the LHS Behavior Program. If so, I agree to comply with all behavior management and modification plans provided by LHS staff and to follow all related instructions, precautions, and handling guidelines. I further acknowledge that I may not engage in behavior modification efforts without prior authorization from LHS.*
