To provide a meaningful experience for every participating group, Lawrence Humane Society generally schedules no more than two group service assignments per month.
-
Requests are reviewed based on several factors, including current shelter needs, available projects, space, staff and volunteer availability, organizational capacity, and the group’s existing partnership with Lawrence Humane Society.
-
Applications must be submitted at least two weeks before the requested service date. Larger groups are encouraged to apply as early as possible. Applications submitted with less than two weeks’ notice may be considered on a case-by-case basis but cannot be guaranteed.
-
If we cannot accommodate a group on its requested dates, we may offer alternative dates or place the request on a waitlist.
A final participant count is required at least three business days before the scheduled activity. This allows our staff adequate time to prepare projects, supplies, and staffing.
-
Cancellations should be submitted at least 72 hours in advance. Groups that cancel with less notice may be placed on a waitlist when submitting future requests.
-
The minimum age to participate in group service is 10. Participants under the age of 16 are considered junior volunteers and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Groups must maintain a ratio of at least one adult for every two junior volunteers.
-
Liability waivers will be emailed to the group contact once an activity has been scheduled. A completed waiver for each participant must be submitted before the group’s scheduled activity begins.
-
Group service assignments generally consist of cleaning, organizing, and preparing animal-enrichment materials. To protect our guests and animals, participants will not work directly with animals during service assignments. If time, weather, and staffing allow, an animal may be brought out to meet the group at the end of the assignment.
- Time commitment is a minumum of 90 minutes, up to 6 hours.
-
Group Mass Street Mutts (MSM) outings offer approved groups an opportunity to take adoptable dogs into the community. Availability depends on the group’s size, participant eligibility, weather, staffing, and the number of appropriate dogs available. Additional instructions and safety requirements will be provided when an outing is scheduled.
-
All participants must wear closed-toe, closed-heel shoes. Anyone who arrives without appropriate footwear will not be permitted to participate.
-
Group service activities are scheduled based on staff and program availability.
-
Groups are typically limited to 10 participants due to space and staffing constraints. Larger groups may be accommodated with sufficient advance notice, depending on the requested activity and organizational capacity. All group sizes must be approved in advance.
